Le organizzazioni Teal, secondo Laloux, sono il prodotto del più recente stadio di evoluzione della coscienza umana, che coincide, secondo la teoria dei bisogni di Maslow, con il livello dell'autorealizzazione. Il passaggio a questo modello organizzativo si verifica quando il modello mentale dei leader cambia e si riescono ad addomesticare le paure dell'ego; le scelte seguono i criteri di correttezza interiore e sono allineate alle convinzioni profonde; l'obiettivo della vita non è più il successo per il successo ma l'autenticità e la riscoperta della nostra vera natura; si affrontano le avversità con gratitudine; si sostituisce il giudizio con la compassione e la razionalità con la saggezza; si ricerca la pienezza nelle relazioni con gli altri, con la vita e la natura. I luoghi di lavoro che i fondatori delle organizzazioni Teal aspirano a creare – e stanno già creando – sono pensati come sistemi viventi.

Tre sono le svolte innovative – nella struttura, nelle pratiche e nella cultura – che questo paradigma sta producendo:

  • Auto-organizzazione e sistema di relazioni paritarie, senza necessità di  piramidi gerarchiche e consenso;
  • Un insieme coerente di pratiche che invitano all'integrità interiore, alla pienezza e all'autenticità delle persone, che possono portare nel lavoro tutto ciò che sono;
  • Focus sull'ascolto di ciò che l'organizzazione vuole diventare, del proposito evolutivo che essa vuole servire, del suo "perché".

È plausibile che in futuro il proposito evolutivo, anziché l’organizzazione, diventi l’entità attorno alla quale le persone si raccoglieranno. Uno scopo specifico attrarrà persone e organizzazioni in costellazioni fluide e mutevoli, secondo le necessità del momento. Le persone si collegheranno secondo modalità diverse – tempo pieno, part-time, freelance, volontariato – e le organizzazioni uniranno le loro forze o si scioglieranno, a seconda di ciò che meglio serve allo scopo in un dato momento. I confini di un’organizzazione potrebbero essere più difficili da rintracciare e la nozione stessa di organizzazione risulterebbe meno rilevante.

Oggi, le organizzazioni sono entità abbastanza ben delimitate. È facile disegnare muri intorno a loro. Basta prendere le risorse, gli uffici e le fabbriche, mettere tutti i dipendenti sul libro paga e si dispone dell’organizzazione. C’è un buon motivo per ritenere che 

tanto più lo scopo diventerà centrale nella vita delle persone, tanto più porosa diventerà l’organizzazione. 

Oggi, l’impiego a tempo pieno è il rapporto contrattuale standard che lega le persone e le organizzazioni. La disposizione è piuttosto rigida, ma dà sia al datore di lavoro che al dipendente un senso di sicurezza e di controllo sul futuro. Anche se un lavoro non offre molta soddisfazione, fornisce uno stipendio, che in tempi incerti non è una cosa da disprezzare. 

Quando le persone passano all’approccio Teal, spesso domano il loro bisogno di controllare il futuro e imparano ad avere fiducia nell’abbondanza.

La sicurezza del lavoro a tempo pieno diventa meno importante rispetto a perseguire ciò che è veramente significativo. Sono pronte per essere autonome o per lavorare come freelance o part-time, anzi a volte ne sono decisamente felici. Apprezzano la flessibilità che consente loro di allocare diversamente il tempo per i vari impegni che caratterizzano la loro vita. Le organizzazioni Teal possono far propria questa flessibilità molto più facilmente. Non è necessaria l’approvazione da parte delle risorse umane o dalla gerarchia, se si vuole ridurre le ore, a patto che si trovi un modo per trasferire gli impegni che si sono presi ai colleghi. Se si vuole tornare e lavorare più ore, è possibile esplorare con i colleghi quali nuovi ruoli e impegni si possono assumere che portino un valore aggiunto per l’organizzazione. Le persone potrebbero non solo ridurre o aumentare il numero di ore lavorate come dipendenti. Potrebbero passare dal lavoro impiegatizio (a tempo pieno e/o part-time) al lavoro autonomo; in altri momenti potrebbero scegliere di fare del volontariato, di donare soldi o temporaneamente potrebbero decidere di non aver alcun coinvolgimento con un’organizzazione, solamente per tornarci più tardi. Possono esserci delle combinazioni; ci sono esempi di persone che pagano per fare volontariato.

I confini dell’organizzazione diventano evanescenti quando la gente viene coinvolta nel corso del tempo in tante diverse capacità.
